A whole archaeological treasury has been found in the underground of Heraklion Centre. After the new excavations that started last May in a building plot in the corner of 25th August street and Vyronos street, the archaeologists discovered the remains of a building that dates from the Arab period (824-961 AD). Archaeologists believe that this was a public building due to its careful construction and its dimensions, but they can't be sure of that.

Apart from the architectural remains, coins, ceramics and some old stones were found around the building. In the centre of the yard, there was a large well, while some cisterns and water pipes located indicate that this must have been a building related to water supply. As experts say, every meter under the ground of Heraklion Town must have ancient remains, as shown by the many excavations that have been conducted till present.
