The first floor of the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion Crete was given today, August 1st, to the public after three years of renovation works. This floor hosts important exhibits from excavations in many parts of Ancient Crete, dating from the Geometric, the Archaic, the Classical, the Hellenistic and the Roman times. Only one more wing is still not accessible to the public, the section with antiquities from the Minoan times, that is expected by the end of 2013.

On the floor of the museum, visitors can see important pieces depicting aspects of the public and private life, constitutions, worshipping and burial practices from the Doric society of the first historical years till the culturally-complex Hellenistic Roman world. Also selected pieces of the former private collections of Stylianos Giamalakis and Nikolaos Metaxas are exhibited, coming from Crete, the rest of Greece and Middle East, dating from the Minoan till the recent years.
