Heraklion Villages: Ano Vianos village in Heraklion
Ano Vianos Heraklion: Ano Vianos village is a large village built amphitheatrically on the foot of Mount Dikti, south east of Heraklion Town. It is surrounded by a wonderful landscape composed of olive, plane and poplar trees and abundant running water.

The picturesque village of Ano Vianos has been built on the site of ancient Vianus which was an autonomous town and that has not been explored yet but Minoan remains have been excavated in the surrounding area.

Narrow alleys, old houses, stone fountains and small squares with little cafes shadowed by huge plane trees are what makes this lovely village and its a pleasant and authentic atmosphere.

The population is about 1220 inhabitants. A monument has been erected in the village in honour of the 820 inhabitants executed by the Germans in September 14th of 1943. Accommodations and traditional taverns are available.

Worth-seeing in the village is the church of Santa Pelagia which has frescoes dating from 1360 and the church of Saint George with murals from 1401.

In the surrounding area it is interesting to see the sanctuary of Hermes and Aphrodite, in Kato Symi as well as the Viglas Cave, with its impressive stalagmites and stalactites.
