The halls of the museum are built in such a way, that visitors can wander through realistic reconstructions of caves, beaches, high mountains and other forms of landscapes that are found here. Among the exhibits are included realistic models of animal and plant species divided according to their ecological groupings.
There is also an extensive photographic exhibition covering animals, plants, rock formations, forests, marshes, beaches, mountains and pictures of the Aegean islands.
There are also special presentations held on endangered animal species. The impressive fossil, rock and mineral galleries located on the first floor allow people to learn about the geological past and future of Crete.
On the same floor is also a unique exhibition on the Minoan environment. It includes a life size, reconstructed Minoan cottage and exposes the visitor to everyday Minoan activities. A section here is also dedicated to the evolutionary routes of man. Visitors learn about evolution from the early primate stages to the origins of civilizations to the evolution of languages through almost perfect replicas of palaeonthropoligical material, photographs and maps.
You can also visit the serene botanical garden filled with Cretan and Mediterranean endemic plants, video and slide show room as well as the charming café on the ground floor which is an ideal place to meet locals and socialize.
The Museum is open Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm and on Sundays from 10.00 am to 6.00 pm and is closed on Saturdays. It can be reached by frequent buses or you can take a car or taxi ride to get there.
The Museum is engaging and informative at the same time. It allows for a deeper understanding of the geologic history of the area while being a wonderful experience at the same time.
