In its 20 rooms, the museum houses finds that have been excavated exclusively in Crete, and related to its prestigious past, from Neolithic to Roman times, through the important and prosperous Minoan period.
Visitors may admire sculptures, clay figurines, superb jewels and astonishing frescoes and remains from the various Minoan palaces of Crete (especially from the palace at Knossos).

On the first floor, a room is dedicated to the great Greek (and Cretan) writer Nikos Kazantzakis, exposing various manuscripts, letters and numerous personal items.
Another part of the museum is dedicated to the Battle of Crete and exhibits a collection of documents, portraits, weapons, etc from the war.
On the second floor an entire room has been turned into a traditional rural Cretan house, the “kamarospito” (from the word “kamares” which means arcades, a basic element embellishing every house of this style), which has all the typical furniture and decoration as well as a workshop with the complete equipment for weaving.
The Natural History Museum of Crete allows visitors to see and experience the biodiversity of Crete.

Six of those icons are particularly important, being works of the famous 16th century Cretan painter Michael Damaskinos, who also painted in the Ionian Islands and in Venice.
In the area of the Church of Saint Mathew of Sinai one can admire a collection of important icons belonging to the Cretan School.
It is located in the village of Varvaroi, 20 kilometres south of the capital, and dedicated to the life of the world famous Cretan writer.
This little aquarium has been in Hersonissos, Crete, since 1995 and is definitely worth a visit.

Close to the Gate of Bethleem, in the Venetian Walls of Heraklion, a new museum recently opened dedicated to the famous Cretan painter Domenicos Theotokopoulos, also known as "El Greco". He was born in Heraklion in 1542 but worked and died in Spain in 1614.
