Crete Messara Gulf Heraklion: The sandy cove of the gulf extends for more than 10 kilometres, south-west of Heraklion.
Many beaches can be found there like the famous beach of Matala (see the section for Matala) and the beautiful beaches of Komo, Kalamaki and Kokkinos Pirgos. All have wonderful golden sand and crystalline waters.
Those beaches are the nesting ground of the endangered sea turtle Caretta-Caretta. |
