Heraklion Beaches: Matala beach in Heraklion Greece

Heraklion Matala Crete : Matala is one of the most famous beaches of Greece and is located on the western coast of the prefecture of Heraklion. The beach extends over 300 metres, and has light golden sand and bamboo umbrellas for rent and sun beds.

This beautiful beach is surrounded by cliffs that turn it into a cove and turn it into a private place. In the rocky cliff in one side of the beach caves have been carved and dug into the rocks during Prehistoric times.

They have been afterwards used by fishermen, resistant and hippies. Today they are fenced. A small fishing village is located behind the beach and offers all the needed accommodations and facilities as well as a camping site.
