The
Chania Yacht Club has various sailing,
swimming, water-skiing and diving school (information:
28210 24387/20077) and, on the beach of Akti Kanari, one
can found the Chania National Centre for Water
Sports (information: 28210 40276).
Renting water-sports materials can also
be found at all the popular beaches of the prefecture
of Rethymno and at the beaches of Agios Nikolaos, Elounda,
Sitia and Ierapetra in the prefecture of Lassithi. Skiffs,
pedal-boats, canoes
and other equipments for sea sports can be hired in all
the most frequented beaches of the island.
All the large hotel complexes possess swimming pools,
tennis courts, mini-golf courses and various sea sports
equipments that can be used by people who don’t have a
room.
In Heraklion visitors will find a covered swimming pool
(2810 261529), a basket-ball and volley-ball court, tennis
courts (Tennis Club telephone number: 2810 226151) and
a covered Gymnasium.
The village of Karteros, in the prefecture of Heraklion,
has a Riding School (Riding Club: 2810
228793).
In Rethymno is a National Stadium (information: 28310
29109) as well as various football grounds, basket-balls
and volley-balls courts.
In Chania there are tennis courts nearby the airport (Chania
Tennis Club telephone: 28210 24010/21293-4) and the Chania
National Stadium which has a gymnasium and basket and
volley-ball courts (information: 28210 23188); the town
also has an Aeronautical Club (information:
28210 29592) and an Athletics Club proposing
courses of Tae-Kwon-Do (information: 28210 45235).
In the prefecture there is another stadium at the villages
of Perivolia and Alikianos; gym facilities can be found
at Vammos and basket-ball courts in Maleme and Kalyves.
Nearby the airport a bowling alley and a mini-golf course
are located and the National Shooting Range is situated
at Kambani.
In the prefecture of Lassithi the capital, Agios Nikolaos,
has a National Stadium equipped with basket-ball and volley-ball
courts (information: 28410 22629) and a National Swimming
Pool where swimming contests are organised.
The towns of Ierapetra and Neapolis also possess stadiums.
Football grounds can be found in many towns and villages
of the prefecture.
For the owner of yachts a marina is available in the port
of Heraklion and offers the possibility to refuel and
supply with water.
Refuelling is also possible at Kali Limenes and yachts
can be moored at Limenas Hersonissou (Yacht Club: 2810
221128 and Heraklion Port Authority: 2810 244956).
In the prefecture of Chania, private yachts can be moored
at the ports of Chania, Kastelli, Souda and Paleohora
(Chania Port Authority: 28210 28888/26083). In the prefecture
of Rethymno the ports of Rethymno, Agia Galini and Panormos
offer facilities for private yachts (Port Authority: 28310
22276) and, in the prefecture of Lassithi, yachts can
be moored in the ports of Agios Nikolaos, Sitia and Ierapetra
(Agios Nikolaos Port Authority: 28410 22312, Sitia Harbour
Master’s Office: 28430 22310 and Ierapetra Harbour Master’s
Office: 28420 22294).
Mountaineering lovers will be delighted
by the mountains of Crete and the amazing landscape, flora
and fauna they will find. Information about refuge, walk-paths
and organised excursions can be obtained from the Mountaineering
Association of Rethymno (28310 23666), from the
Greek Mountaineering Club of Chania (28210
24647) and from the Mountaineering Association
of Heraklion (2810 227609).
Skiing is possible at the small ski runs
on Lefka Oroi (White Mountains) in the prefecture of Chania
and on the big and the small runs on Mount Idi (also called
Psiloritis- the highest mountain of Crete) which extending
from the prefecture of Rethymno to the prefecture of Heraklion. |
