Crete Local Products, Greece: Guide to the local products of Crete

Crete Island produces many products of high quality which can be found in the 4 capitals of each prefecture (Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lassithi).
Crete Greece is particularly famous for its excellent olive oil, the best in the world. Known for its healthiness, the Cretan cuisine is often based on olive oil.

Some of the Cretan specialities (oil-based) are sun dried string beans in olive oil and tomato sauce, rabbit cooked in olive oil and bay leaves, snails with olive oil, vinegar and rosemary and simple but tasty snack called “dakos” which consists of dry barley bread soaked in olive oil and topped with crushed fresh tomatoes, chopped onion and garlic.

Cretan pies are also delicious and of a great variation.

The other famous speciality of Crete Island is its cheese. Various kinds of succulent cheese can be found all over the island, in towns and in the many mountainous and picturesque villages. The most famous of those Cretan cheeses are the “myzithra” (a gruyere-type cheese) and the “anthotyro” (a local soft white cheese) which can also be found in all the areas of Greece.

The island of Crete also produces excellent honey which has a fantastic texture, a golden colour and an exquisite taste.
Beautiful hand-woven articles are made in the villages of Zaro (prefecture of Heraklion), Anogia, Zoniana (prefecture of

Rethymno) and Kritsa (prefecture of Lassithi) as well as superb traditional embroideries.

Interesting woodcarvings and potteries can also be found in some of the mountainous villages of Crete and particularly in the village of Margarites (prefecture of Rethymno) where visitors can see artists create pieces of art in the pottery workshop of the village.

Worth-seeing is the traditional Cretan costume consisting in boots (called “stivania”), a little hat made with a black scarf and the famous Cretan knife (sort of dagger). All those items are hand made and can be found in some villages and in the towns of Chania and Heraklion.

Crete Greece is also famous for its excellent wine and for its local alcohol called “raki” which is particularly strong.
