One of the many Venetian fortress is the Kales Castle on Lassithi. On Sitia of Lassithi you can admire another venetian fortress which called "Kazarma".
As a proof of the grandeur and magnificence of their civilization, the Venetians adorned many towns of Crete with sumptuous monuments such as grand public buildings, homes for the officials, palaces, fountains, loggias, clocks and squares that can still be admired today in Rethymno, Heraklion and Chania. Such an example is the building of Megalo Neorio in Chania, which now houses the Arsenali Centre of Mediterranean Architecture. |

The “sachnisi” is one famous example, and consists in a wooden balcony added to the first floor of the older Venetian houses. The hammam or the bath house is another influence that was brought by the Ottoman occupation.
Numerous examples of rural Cretan houses can be seen and consist in simple, cubic constructions made of stone, wood and earth and have a few openings. Later the walls of the houses were painted in ochre, blue or pink. | |
Many examples of the beautiful Cretan and Venetian architecture, such as the noble residence of Baroness Von Schwartz in Chania and the Venetian Loggia in Rethymnon, have been well-preserved and constitute an important part of the social and cultural history of the beautiful island of Crete.
The Porta Guora (Big Door), in the entrance of Rethymno, and the numerous mosques along Crete are traces of the foreign rulers. One of the most well-preserved mosques in Crete is the Ibrahim Han Mosque in Rethymno. |
