Bekri Mezes
This dish is particularly popular in Crete and has spread in taverns all over Greece. Its name actually means "the dish of the drunken man".
Ingredients:
- 1 kilo of beef cut in small pieces
- 1 green pepper julienne
- 1 onion of medium size julienne
- 1 cup of white wine
- 2 spoons of olive oil
- some salt
- pepper
- some minced cumin (optional)
Preparation:
Saute the minced onion and the pepper into a casserole with olive oil. Then add the pieces of beef into the casserole, mix at intervals and leave the meat to get a white colour. Add some water, until the meat is covered, remove the foam of the meat and leave it to boil and get soft. Then, add the white wine and the spices. Bekri Mezes is best served hot. On top of the dish, you can add some tomatoes cut in pieces.
