The mayor of Souda, a suburb of Chania town, with two letters to the President of the Greek Parliament and the Greek Minister of Internal Affairs, asks for the preservation and restoration of Itzedin Fortress. In his letters, the mayor asks that this historical fortress will be restored and turned into a Conference Centre and a museum of modern history.

Itzedin Fortress (along with the Castle of Souda and Paleokastro) was one of the most important defensive works during the Turkish rule in Crete (17th-19th century). Later on, it was used as a prison for criminals, condemned to death or political prisoners. Even Eleftherios Venizelos, who was to become the greatest prime minister of Greece, spent a forthnight there in 1903 as a revolutionist.
