km from the capital, that serves internal flights and many charter flights in summer.
The second largest town of Chania Crete is Kissamos, from where daily boats to Balos and Gramvoussa depart in summer months. Close to Kissamos, are the lovely beaches of Falassarna with golden sand and exotic water. A drive along the coastline from Kissamos to south brings you to Elafonissi, one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete with the purest water. Above Elafonissi, there is the Monastery of Chrissoskalitissa with nice view to the Aegean Sea.
The southern side of Chania Crete is less tourist developed and has many virgin areas to explore: from secluded beaches to swim in total privacy, to impressive gorges for hiking and traditional villages where you can see the true picture of Cretan life. From early May to late October, the Gorge of Samaria opens to hikkers. This 16km-long gorge is the longest in Europe and constitutes the most popular and organized hiking trail in Crete.
Paleochora and Sfakia are the two best organized resorts in southern Chania Crete, but still these places have managed to keep their traditional character. Lovely beaches surround these villages and apart from hiking, this region offers the possibility for mountain biking and bungee jumping. In fact, the gorge of Aradaina is the only bungee jumpin site in Greece.
Most popular resorts in Chania Crete are located in the northern side and includes Georgioupoli, Maleme, Platanias, Kolimbari, Agioi Apostoli, Kalyves and other nice villages on the way from Chania Town to Rethymnon Town. Tourist development is controlled and there are places to suit all preferences, from busy resorts to tiny secluded places in the middle of nowhere. |
