It is a lively village with a population of about 2000 inhabitants and becomes very busy during high season but still have places for those who want to get away from the crowd.
Paleohora offers a wide range of accommodations, various restaurants serving all kind of cuisine, plenty of shops and some lively bars and clubs staying open until dawn. Paleohora used to be the principal harbour of the region in later periods.
The Venetian fort called Selino that stands in Paleohora was built in 1280 and gave its name to the whole region of south-western Crete which was renamed from Orina to Selino.
The Romans destroyed the fort in 1332, and it was rebuilt by the Venetians in 1334, who also founded a new settlement under it called Vourgos, designated to welcome merchants and workers.
In 1539 the fort was destroyed again by the famous pirate Barbarosa, but was restored in 1595.
Little boats link Paleohora to Agia Roumeli, Hora Sfakion and the small island of Gavdos.
Regular buses meke every day the connexion between Paleohora and Chania.
