Chania Kolimbari Village

Kolimbari Chania: Kolimbari is a seaside village located 24 km west of Chania town. With fish taverns along the beach and small hotels, Kolimbari is a quiet resort ideal for families. The small port of Kolimbari provides a safe spot for fishing boats and yachts to moor. This is where the Turks landed in Crete in 1645, which led to the capture of the island for the next four centuries, till 1912.

A lovely sight to visit in Kolimbari is the Monastery of Hodegetria (Moni Gonias), a 17th century monastery on the corner of the Bay of Chania, offering gorgeous view to the sea. The Monastery was burnt down in 1645 by the Turks but it was rebuilt. During the Second World War, it constituted a centre of resistance against the Germans. Today it hosts an interesting ecclesiastical museum and a rich library.

Beautiful villages to visit near Kolimbari are Ravdouha and Rodopos. Surrounded by lush greenery and wild natural beauty, these villages keep intact their traditional character. Both organized and secluded beaches can also be found close to Kolimbari.
