Chania Kandanos Village

Kandanos Chania: A lovely village built in one of the most beautiful fertile regions of Crete spread with olive groves and vineyards. Kandanos is located 60 km from Chania town and close to Paleochora and is known for the finest productions of virgin oil.

Kandanos flourished during the Byzantine and Venetian times and today many stone built houses witness its important role. The village took part in the revolutionary fights against the Turks, in the 19th century. During the Second World War, it was burnt down by the Germans. In the square, there are inscriptions of the Nazi conquerors that remain as a monument of the tragic event.

Many Byzantine churches and monasteries are found in the region around Kandanos and most of them date from the 14th and 15th century.
