This is the capital of the wild and unspoiled region of Skafia, one of the most mountainous area in Crete.
It is situated around the White Mountains range, which are very high and possess numerous impressive and beautiful gorges, the most famous ones being the Samaria Gorges.
The Hora Sfakion is situated 70 kilometres from Chania, on the south-western coast of Crete, and it constitutes an excellent starting point for the exploration of the southern coast of Crete.
The village is very traditional and authentic and its calm atmosphere is only interrupted a few times in the afternoon by the arrivals of hikers coming from the Samaria Gorge by small boats, but they leave the village very quickly so peacefulness comes back in a few minutes.
A few excellent restaurants located on the seafront can be found in Hora Sfakion as well as plenty of simple accommodations. Right in the village visitors will find a calm pebble beach. Various other fine beaches are located nearby the village.
Hora Sfakion has 500 inhabitants, who make a living fishing and sheep and goat raising, producing delightful cheeses such as anthotiri or mizithra. This village is one of the best places to experience the traditional Crete.
It is linked regularly with Chania and one can use it as a starting point to visit the unbelievable cliffs of Imbros and Samaria.
