For Cretans life is a celebration and all the opportunities are good to organise festivals and feasts which are always accompanied by excellent local food, music and dances.
List of festivals in Chania, Crete Island Greece:
On the 15th of September, in Saint Nikitas, in the region of Sfakia, various athletic competitions are organised.
Various cultural events are organised by the municipality of Chania during August in the town of Chania and in other villages of the prefecture.
 
The celebration of the Virgin Mary on August the 15th at the monastery of Gonia and at the monastery of Chrysoskalitissa and celebrated by various festivals all over the prefecture of Chania and all over Crete and Greece (it is one of the most important religious feasts of Greece).
On the 20th until the 30th of May the anniversary of the Battle of Chania is celebrated at the village of Maleme. The sporting events of the Venizelia Games are also taking place Chania town at the same time.
 
Various cultural events are organised at Paleohora during the month of August, focused on music and called “Musical August”.
Cultural events are taking place in the beginning of August at the village of Vamos and are gathering numerous events of all kinds.

In the same village, in April, the “Hohlidovradia” festival is taking place during which locals are cooking snails which is one of the many delicious Cretan specialities and delicacies.

 

On the 23rd of April, in the village of Assi Gonia thousands of sheep are blessed in the church of Saint George and their milk is distributed to everyone. A great feast with dances, music and food follow the celebration.
 
All year long, depending on the seasons, festivals are organised to celebrate the cherries in the village of Karanou, the chestnuts, in the village of Elos and the sardines in Neo Chora.
 
In the beginning of August a wine festival is organised at the village of Kastelli and constitutes a great opportunity to taste the divine Cretan wine accompanied by local music, dances and appetizers.
