Top 5 things to do in Santorini

Santorini is the ultimate place to visit in Greece. An island with special landscape and unique architecture, Santorini island amazes visitors at first sight. Located on the southern side of the Aegean Sea, this is the most popular Greek island and also a very frequent cruise port in the Mediterranean.

Here are the top 5 things to do in Santorini:

#1 Watch the sunset from Oia

Sunset from Oia

Watching the sunset is the top thing to do in Santorini. The sunset is fabulous from all caldera villages, but the best sunset can be seen from the picturesque village of Oia. See the red-orange sun sinking in the deep waters of the Aegean Sea and cherish these memories for a lifetime.

#2 Walk the caldera villages

Caldera villages of Santorini

The most impressive places in Santorini are the white villages built right on the edge of the caldera. Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia are the most beautiful villages on the island. Walk along the narrow, paved streets, see the traditional cave houses and, most of all, enjoy the wonderful view to the Aegean Sea and the famous volcano.

#3 Take the boat to the volcano

Volcano of Santorini

In tourist season, daily boat trips depart from the old port of Fira to visit the volcano and the hot springs. Walk on the hot soil of the volcano and see the impressive view of Santorini just opposite. After the trip to the volcano, the boat continues to the hot springs where visitors can swim in thermal waters.

#4 Visit Akrotiri

After many years of restoration (since 2005), the Minoan Town of Akrotiri reopened to visitors in April 2012. This is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. Excavations revealed a highly-developed settlement with impressive space planning and trade activity. The town flourished in the Minoan times and was destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Santorini in about 1,650 BC.

#5 Swim in the Red Beach

Red Beach in Santorini

Although this is not the most comfortable seashore in Santorini due to the large pebbles, the Red Beach is certainly the most impressive beach on the island. Surrounded by a cliff of reddish stones, this place gets very popular in high season. Other nice beaches in Santorini are the Black Beach (Kamari) with soft black volcanic stones and organized facilities and the White Beach, which is located right next to the Red Beach and is a frequent naturist place.
