Most people are unaware of the fact that the Greek islands are great not only for relaxing beach holidays, but also for adventurous activities. Many islands in the Aegean are fantastic places for windsurfing and kite surfing.

The wind in the Aegean Sea is strong in summer, especially in the afternoon hours, creating perfect conditions for such sports. Windsurfers will find a heaven of bright sun, sparkling refreshing waters and strong winds. Here are some of the best Greek islands for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Naxos

Almost all the western side of the island offers perfect windsurfing conditions, created by the meltemi summer wind that comes from the north. The most famous beach for windsurfing and kite surfing is Mikri Vigla, as it enjoys unique conditions with the wind speeding up through the strait between Naxos and Paros. Laguna, Saint George Beach and Plaka are also good windsurfing and kite spots in Naxos island. July and August is the ideal time for water sports, as there is strong wind every day, from midday until late in the afternoon.

Lefkada

Among the best Greek islands for kitesurfing and windsurfing is also Lefkada island. The beaches of Agios Ioannis and Vassiliki are especially famous for the special wind conditions that improve the entire experience of these sports.

The beach of Vassiliki, on the southern coast, is perfect for windsurfing. The wind changes direction and gets stronger during the day, making it a great place for all levels. Agios Ioannis Beach, just outside Lefkada Town, is ideal for kite surfing as a steady thermal wind blows all throughout summer. Both beaches are great for athletes of all levels, from beginners to highly advanced surfers.

Paros

The best spots for windsurfing in Paros are New Golden Beach and Golden Beach, on the south eastern coast of the island. Also Pounda beach, on the sea strait between Paros and Antiparos islands, is an international kite surfing spot and has excellent conditions for all levels. The wind is always side on-shore and there are no obstacles in the long and sandy beach.

Rhodes

With 300 days of sunshine per year and strong side winds, Rhodes is among the best Greek islands for windsurfing and kite. Theologos beach, close to the airport of Rhodes, is fantastic for windsurfers and kiters of all levels, as the conditions allow them to jump many feet off the water and has stores that rent brand-new surfing material. Other Rhodes windsurfing and kitesurfing spots are Prassonissi and Ixia, where the clear shoreline makes water sports learning fun and easy. On the west coast of Rhodes, Ialyssos beach provides many excellent spots for windsurfing.

Karpathos

Away from mass tourism, Karpathos is surely among the best Greek islands for windsurfing. This is a quickly developing windsurfing island and only the last years it has become known among surfers around the world. The most popular beach for windsurfing in Karpathos is Afiartis. There are strong thermal winds in the area and some surfing centres have opened lately.

Kos

Psalidi beach is an exceptional place for windsurfing in Kos, with steady sea shore winds in high season. At the south western part of the island is the windiest spot in Kos, Kefalos beach. Mastihari is also renowned as a water sports centre with many windsurfing centers along the beach. Wind and kite surfing equipment, courses and tips are available in all spots.
