This comprehensive city tour will show you some of the most important landmarks and sights of the historical center of Athens but also a thorough visit to the Acropolis where your guide will give you in-depth guided tour of the history of this world heritage site and its breathtaking monuments.
The tour begins inside the Syntagma metro station where your guide will show you shortly (in 10 minutes) the archaeological exhibitsthat came to lightduring the construction of the metro. You will then continue on to the House of the Greek parliament, the Monument to the Unknown Soldier and watch the changing of the guards.
Your will have an explaination about the National Gardens as well of the Anglican church of S. Paul, theByzantine church of Sotira of Lykodimos, (Russian church) and the beautiful neoclassical Zappeion Hall, in front of which tower the surviving columns of the Temple of Zeus and Hadrian’s Arch, both of which you will have to opportunity to visit.
From there you enter the famous Plaka district where you will visit the Monument of Lysicrates and a general explanation about the Plaka area.
From there we head towards the beautiful pedestrian walk way of Dionyssiou Areopagitou until we reach the Acropolis where we will begin our ascent while taking in the spectacular views of the city below. Before that, we will see the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Your guide will give you a detailed explanation of the glorious monuments of the Acropolis such as, the Parthenon, Erection, Propylaia, Nike Temple and you will get explaination about the surrounding monuments as well (Dionysus sanctuary, Philopappos Hill, Mars Hill, Observatory, Pnyx Hill, Ancient Agora, Hehpastus Temple).
Your tour will end at the New Acropolis Museum which is the definite must for everybody visiting the city and the best way to complete the archaeological tour to the Acropolis of Athens.
The New Acropolis Museum was designed by Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi in co-operation with the Greek architect Michalis Photiadis. Its unique design has incorporated the excavations which are visible under stunning glass floors.
The Acropolis masterpieces are marked out and given the prominence they deserve through the ideal interior atmosphere conditions, the natural lighting, as well as easy visitor access, panoramic views and excellent layout of the exhibition areas. It exhibits about 4,000 artifacts.
Duration: 5 1/2 hrs, the walking itself is 45 minutes? there will be ample of time to sit and rest a little in shady quiet places. There is a break of 1 hour between the Acropolis tour and the Museum tour.
