The War Museum of Athens is located at the corner of Rizari Street and Vassilissis Sophias Avenue, between the Byzantine Museum and the National Gallery of Greece. It first opened its doors in 1975 and is housed in a modern-shaped building. In fact, the first floor is bigger than the ground floor, thus the building looks like a mushroom. In the yard of the museum sit old warplanes and cannons.

The museum aims to present Greek fights throughout history. The objects are exhibited in ten rooms that cover Greek history from the Prehistoric Period to the Second World War.

The exhibition spaces of the War Museum include several wings. More specifically, each of the following are presented in a different section of the museum:
• Stone Age
• Bronze Age
• The Archaic-Classical Age
• Alexandrine-Hellenistic Period
• Byzantium
• Latin Occupation and Turkish Occupation
• Greek Revolution of 1821
• Greek State in the 19th century
• Struggle for Macedonia
• Balkan Wars
• World War I
• Asia Minor Campaign
• Greek-Italian War
• German Invasion in Greece and the Battle of Crete
• Middle East and Rimini (1942-1944)
• Occupation, Resistance and Liberation of the Greeks
• Greek Expeditionary Corps in Korea (1950-1955)
• Cyprus
• Uniforms and Flags

Apart from actual weapons, the museum also includes photographs from various Greek battles as well as some artifacts from Ancient China and Japan.
The museum also hosts a well-organized library, an amphitheater for lectures and a conference room.

The War Museum is open daily from 09:00 to 19:00 during the high season (April to October) and from 09:00 to 17:00 during the low season (November to March).
